My Father raced in New York and being from Long Island all his local tracks closed also or now condos. Justin Cooper is one of the only few to make big time out of Long Island. Rick Johnson was my hero when I was a child. I watched Profiles of the Champ on VHS about 100 times on repeat. My dad said he got passed in 1982 by Kent Howerton, Mike Bell, Chuck Sun, Danny Maggoo Chandler to name a few.
I was visiting Berkley, CA in 2013 and spoke to a mountain biker at cycling related event in Sausalito. He was protesting/flyering about trail access closing and I informed him about what at the time was Agenda 21.
I was staying in Berkey for thee months with my friend that was a custom bicycle builder and lived on a Bicycle/BART riding all over. One of the best times of my life!
Rick Johnson, age 17, passed me on a Yamaha 490 at Mammoth Mountain MX qualifier race and immediately lost control into tank-slappers, He went off the track, I then repassed him. Three minutes later he re-passed me again at the end of the long-whooped out straightaway, this time for good. He was Scary fast like Magoo. I rode a Honda 480.
I parked next to Micky Dimond, Team Maico that year.
