The Juxtaposition library and study (my sanctuary):
A gentleman's study, also called a den or library, is designed to be a comfortable getaway from an otherwise fast-paced life. It is a masculine retreat featuring comfortable furniture, deep colors, dark wood and items of interest to the man who inhabits it. Before man caves became the rage, the man of the house retired to his study to relax, away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the home.
Dark wood floors warmed by Oriental area rugs in deep jewel tones such as purple, burgundy and deep green are the perfect foundation for a room reserved for the man of the house. If wood floors aren't in your plan, wall-to-wall carpet in a rich color such as chocolate brown or navy blue works well to anchor the room.
Stick with dark colors, wood paneling or wainscoting and wallpaper that gives a wide berth to mini prints and pastels. Patterns in deep colors such as forest green and blue watch plaid work well. You might consider the richness of dressing the walls with fabric in lieu of wallpaper.
Choose colors in keeping with the others in the room. Hang the fabric or paper above wainscoting featuring raised panels stained in a dark hue such as mahogany. Floor-to-ceiling bookcases on one wall provide storage for books as well as display space, reveals Gentleman's Journal. Wall sconces above the couch invite a gentleman to kick off his shoes and stretch out, book in hand.
A man's study is also a place to kick back, and its furnishings should be comfortable. A worn leather couch flanked by matching club chairs is the perfect spot for after-dinner conversation or a place to relax and watch television. Place a generously sized recliner in a corner, add a floor lamp and a simply designed Craftsman side table and you have a cozy nook for reading or napping.
Table lamps with stained glass shades are restful, while desk lamps with high-wattage bulbs provide task lighting. Items such as leather desk sets, cigar boxes and vintage fountain pens add interest to the man's desk. A cashmere throw graces the back of the couch.
